The Tree of Jesse
Do you know about your grandparents, and their parents, and their parents' parents?
The Jesse Tree is a symbol about the ancestors of Jesus.
Long before Jesus was born, a farmer by the name of Jesse (Isai) יִשַׁי lived in the town of Bethlehem. He belonged to the Tribe of Judah. Jesse had a son called David, who became the King of the Israelites.
David had twenty children. A few generations later, we eventually come to Joseph, husband of Mary and adopted father of Jesus.
We know about Jesse from scripture (Isaiah 11:1-2)

Et egredietur virga de radice Iesse et flos de radice eius ascendet.
Et requiescet super eum spiritus Domini spiritus sapientiae et intellectus spiritus consilii et fortitudinis spiritus scientiae et pietatis. |
And there shall come forth a rod out of the root of Jesse, and a flower shall rise up out of his root.
And the spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him: the spirit of wisdom, and of understanding, the spirit of counsel, and of fortitude, the spirit of knowledge, and of godliness. |
Every day of Advent, we add a symbol about what happened between Jesse and Jesus. On Christmas Eve the final symbol is added to the tree—usually a star, or the "Star of David".
