MUSIC DIRECTOR/ORGANIST
Dr Nicholas Francis Ng is a composer, performer and Honorary Research Fellow at Queensland Conservatorium. Starting with the Suzuki method on classical piano from the age of 4, he moved on to other instruments and composition in his late teens. Nicholas teaches at Piano Keys Tuition and is member of Performance 4a, BeMAC, Outcast Performing Arts and the trio tunCLOUD.
Nicholas' music may be heard in concert halls, on radio (ABC Classic FM), dance and theatre (QL2 Centre for Youth Dance, Griffin Theatre Company) and museum installations (Art Gallery of NSW, Queensland Art Gallery). Performance venues include 'The Studio', Sydney Opera House and Merkin Concert Hall (New York) and at various international festivals. Nicholas has been commissioned by ensembles such as the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and is currently working on a Performance 4a/Griffin Theatre Company theatre piece The Serpent's Table for the 2014 Sydney Festival. He is published by Orpheus Music and Australian Academic Press.
In 2008, Nicholas received a doctorate in composition and ethnomusicology from the Australian National University for his research on sacred music in the Roman Catholic and Chan Buddhist communities of Sydney. He continues to publish in this and related areas.
A member of the Tridentine/Old Rite community (Extraordinary Form), Nicholas has been performing sacred music since he was 12 and is keen to share his love for plainchant and Renaissance polyphony with anyone who is interested. He is indebted to his teachers and mentors: Fr John O'Neill (Parish Priest, Sydney), Sr Maria (Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart), Sr Marie (Franciscan Missionaries of Mary), Maria Henry (St Michael the Archangel Traditional Latin Mass Community, Canberra), Dr Fiona Walsh (St Gregory's Traditional Latin Mass Community, Brisbane), and Joanna Tondys and Anthony Elsmore (Maternal Heart of Mary Traditional Latin Mass Parish, Sydney). With his Josephite and Franciscan musical upbringing, he is rather astonished to be working at St Mary's, where both religious orders meet through the historical involvement of St Mary MacKillop of the Cross, and ministerial work of the Capuchin Friars. He dreams of organising a regular Choral Vespers service at St Mary's.
In his free time, Nicholas enjoys cooking, calligraphy, gymming, tai chi weaponry and classical ballet.
